Little Things #46: Succulent dreams

Succulent dreamI’m not very good at plants. However, these succulents have managed to stay alive and even grow (by a lot)! So very excited and proud of them. I am hoping my good luck with them will rub off on my other house plants. Feel free to share any tips with me. Are you joining me in my May daily challenge?

Little Things #45: (Un)broken lens!

Broken lens filterI hope my dad doesn’t see this…but I have been forever borrowing his Minolta SLR camera from the 80’s (which he knows about). However, what he doesn’t know is that his beautiful camera made a hard landing on the concrete floor of a museum, cracking this lens. I blame it on the tiny, thin camera strap. It slowly inched its way off my shoulder. Seriously. People were horrified when they saw the camera crash to the floor. It was the loudest sound in the museum.

So this happened last summer. It was my lens of choice (50mm), and I haven’t been able to use it or find a replacement since. Taking photos hasn’t been as fun without it, and I definitely haven’t been taking as many since then.

However, that all changed last week when I looked at the lens again…and realized I didn’t actually break it! Yes, it looks absolutely awful, but I only broke the filter, and not the lens itself. WAHOO! Lens filters are the greatest.

So now the lens is looking pretty again with a brand new filter, and it can come out to play. Best. News. Ever. Just don’t tell my dad.

Little Things #42: The crispy smell of fall

Fall in Portland! Crunch fall leaves Oregon autumnSo while we are having an unconventionally hot and sunny week deep into the month of October, the trees definitely think it’s autumn. It’s an incredible sight to experience when Portland’s autumns are usually filled with colorful leaves and…rain. I love seeing the leaves against a sunny blue sky. So here are some obligatory Instagram photos of fall leaves!

Little Things #41: My favorite jogging buddy

My favorite jogging buddySo, I’ve been taking it easy and avoiding any strenuous activity. Why? Well, because of my knee. I had a knee injury that took about 6 months to heal, and I have been apprehensive to start back up again for fear of injuring myself again. I mean, you don’t really know if your body is ready until you just do it. But I’ve been a little scared.

Welp, I adopted a puppy. And he doesn’t exactly like to just meander around. Running is more his thing, and I decided to just jump right in! Well, with jogging. Actually, a walk/run/walk/run type of thing. So I’ve been taking it slow, and it’s going really well. I can’t wait to take on longer runs with this guy, it’s a lot of fun hitting the trails by my new home. We can’t actually do longer runs until he gets older, since he’s still developing and longer runs can put him at risk for developing hip displasyia. Well, good thing my run is pretty much his walking fast speed. So I think I’m good. 🙂

But I am not looking forward to running in the rain. Neither is the puppy. That’s what we have on the horizon since we are moving into an autumn in Portland. Lots of rain dumping on us. But we’re going to do it anyway. And he’s getting a raincoat (sorry, Everett!). Dogs in raincoats are pretty much the cutest overload thing there is. Everett definitely doesn’t agree.

Little Things #40: Please play me!

Please play m e! Piano! Push Play!Over the summer, I ran across this piano just hanging out by the Portland Art Museum. All over the piano was the label, “Play me!” It turns out, there is a project called, “Piano! Push Play!” that puts pianos out in the public for everyone to play! Instant happy.

Learn more about the project.

Little Things #39: City lights & trains

Max lights, long exposureToday I found myself driving toward my old apartment downtown when I needed to go in the opposite direction home. it took me a few blocks to realize it, that I no longer live downtown. Wow, it’s crazy what 6 years will instill in you! Every time I drive toward downtown, I smile looking at the “giant” skyscrapers, the hustle and bustle of city life, and how easy it is to just walk everywhere. And anywhere. I am already missing that, but I wouldn’t trade in my house for anything. I LOVE my neighborhood. I LOVE my home. But that doesn’t mean that I can’t miss my previous home…and I do. Good thing it’s not too far away, and I have a sister and cat in my old home downtown. So I think I will be back often. 🙂

Little Things #38: This face.

Kitty catMy sister owns a cat appropriately named Kim Chee. I love this cute face dearly, but I didn’t realize how much I would miss her when I moved. I have been going back to the apartment to get it all cleaned up and prepped for my sister’s new roommate, and I get to see this adorable kitty. GUH, I miss her. It’s silly, I know. But she is a lovely, quirky cat.

Little Things #37: Summer is not over yet.

Cliff jumpingChange is in the air, and everyone is talking about how excited they are about autumn. Pumpkin this, pumpkin that. People are even wearing boots. Well, I love autumn too. But I am not ready to move on from summer yet. We had some monsoon-like rains and thunderstorms the other day which made everyone believe that Portland’s summer is over. Well, the next day it was sunny and hot. Folks, summer is not over yet. Let’s enjoy it while it lasts, mmkay? I can’t wait for pumpkins and boots too. But all in good time. 🙂
