It’s been a while…

IMG_0420-0.JPG
I can sit here and make up a lot of excuses, all true, on why I’ve stayed away from here so long. But I won’t bother you with the details.

I am making a comeback, slowly but surely.

For now, I will leave you with a fun idea that I found on the internet, as many great ideas are found, naturally. I recently got back from a trip to South Korea, visiting family I haven’t seen in ages. To commemorate the trip, I made a t-shirt that summarized the entire 1 weeks, all in just a few sentences:

“I should have learned more Korean before I left, visiting family I haven’t seen in nearly 20 years. This trip included vacationing on a honeymoon island – not with my extended family, not my lover. I made kids cry, and my sister wanted to noraebang so bad that our cousins stayed up until 1am on a school night karaoking with us. *Gangnam Style forever* We also found out that our family members are cat people: They hate rain and love naps. Family is the best.”

I plan on making a new commemorative t-shirt for every trip and vacation I go on from here on out.

What do you do to remember your trips?

Road trip fever

Puppy window drivingIt’s no secret that I am in a constant state of wanderlust. While I won’t be going very far, my entire summer weekends will be filled with road trips for work and pleasure, and celebrations of love (it’s wedding season, of course). So here we go, let’s do this, summer! I’ll be sure to share my adventures with you. ❤

Where do you plan on going this season?

Happy Earth Day!

Star jasmine on chain link fenceToday, make sure to do something about the environment and appreciate the beauty that surrounds you! I was one of those kids who bombarded my neighborhood with homemade signs to “save the whales,” and I even started my own garbage pick-up club, ridding my neighborhood of unwanted trash. Yes, I was that child.

These days, I can’t wait for my star jasmine to grow and cover my chain link fence. I love natural borders, and am looking forward to enjoying some backyard privacy with some greenery. The added bonus, I will be surrounded by one of my favorite scents in the entire world. Send my jasmine some good, healthy thoughts so it can grow, grow, grow!

Little Things #45: (Un)broken lens!

Broken lens filterI hope my dad doesn’t see this…but I have been forever borrowing his Minolta SLR camera from the 80’s (which he knows about). However, what he doesn’t know is that his beautiful camera made a hard landing on the concrete floor of a museum, cracking this lens. I blame it on the tiny, thin camera strap. It slowly inched its way off my shoulder. Seriously. People were horrified when they saw the camera crash to the floor. It was the loudest sound in the museum.

So this happened last summer. It was my lens of choice (50mm), and I haven’t been able to use it or find a replacement since. Taking photos hasn’t been as fun without it, and I definitely haven’t been taking as many since then.

However, that all changed last week when I looked at the lens again…and realized I didn’t actually break it! Yes, it looks absolutely awful, but I only broke the filter, and not the lens itself. WAHOO! Lens filters are the greatest.

So now the lens is looking pretty again with a brand new filter, and it can come out to play. Best. News. Ever. Just don’t tell my dad.

April Challenge: 30 days of my favorite things!

30 Days ChallengeJust in case you missed it, I am doing a new daily challenge every month so that every day, I am focused, trying new things, taking risks, or enjoying things that make me happy. The plus side? I get to choose the challenge! It can’t be too hard then, right? RIGHT? Last month was 31 days of healing. I had been through a lot in February, so I wanted to use March to recuperate and heal. Because most of my photography is film-based, you will be seeing a recap of that month a little later!

As for April, I knew I had to make this one special. It’s my Birthday month, and to make it even more enjoyable and me-centric (which I am not), I thought the best compromise would be to fill every day with something I love. It can be as little as listening to one of my favorite songs, or as big as going on a day trip somewhere. Who knows. The point is I want to enjoy things that make me very happy, and while Birthday month is a great excuse for that…I think we should do a lot more of enjoying our favorite things more often regardless.

So…cheers! Will you be joining me? What are some of your favorite things?

More Holga!

So film photography is a love of mine, and here I am NOT taking any photos. So here are a few photos I took recently with a “toy” camera of mine, the lovely Holga, coupled with some expired film. Did I also say that I love experimenting? This particular roll had some mishaps, and without getting into the particulars, you can see how some of the photos blend together and such. But I LOVE those mishaps.

So here’s to taking more photos with film, photography mishaps, and sharing and capturing the little moments in my life. Cheers!

Itching for spring

img743img734img716

So…I have my work cut out for me. Last summer, my sister came over to help me do some yard work, and we never quite finished with the “mundane” projects to get the yard ready for this upcoming spring. Can I say how lucky I am to have a sister that will come over to do yardwork?

My house was a short sale and sat on the market for a good 6 months or so before I was able to move in. What does that mean? It means weeds took over the entire yard, plants have grown between every crack and crevice of the patio rocks that trail around my backyard, and weed roots that burrow feet of length below the ground (yes, I said FEET!) . Yikes.

With that said, I am getting sooo antsy to start doing yardwork and get my backyard ready to enjoy for the sunny months in Portland! I love spending time outdoors, and I want to start a pretty epic garden. Well, epic for me. I have an interesting relationship with plants. I love them, but would benefit from learning how to take care of them properly. That’s the nicest way to put it.

So I am a little quite a bit intimidated about the process, but ready to take it on. I still have a LOT of prep work to do (yard party, anyone?). But I think I’ll enjoy some sunny days outdoors in the yard, regardless of what I am doing. Are you ready for the sunshine?

Hello, 2014!

Happy New Year!

E and I on New Year’s Eve, saying “hello” to 2014!

So, I’m not the New Year’s Resolution type. I like the idea of goals, and I like them even better when you have a checklist of fun things you want to get done. So here is my 2014 checklist of things I HAVE to do this year. In no apparent order.

  • Take Huey (my pup) for his first beach trip and some off-leash fun in the sand and waves!
  • More hiking. Yes, definitely more hiking. And camping.
  • More running…half marathon, perhaps?
  • Make regular wellness appointments. I take care of everything around me, but not myself. That needs to change…
  • Learn to sew. Craft more. Maybe open up an Etsy store with some fun creations? Maybe? Note: I am the WORST sewer in the world, at least when I was in junior high. Maybe things can change? Maybe?
  • Home projects. Actually set aside time to get things done! Or at least unpack. Sheesh. I still have boxes.
  • Gardening. Can I keep some veggies alive for more than a few days? 🙂
  • Roast my own coffee.
  • Canine Good Citizenship certification. For my dog (not me).
  • More, more, more , more photos! And prints!
  • Get out of the state. Better yet, get out of the country!
  • Read more. Especially after I finish up my closet/reading nook. I can’t wait.
  • Thrift more. Find more treasures!
  • More dates with E.
  • More dates with friends.

…so it looks like my 2014 is the year of “more everything.” I better get started! What’s on your list for 20

December Photo Challenge: Week 3

December Photo Challenge Week 3Since I just caught up with Week 2, I figured I should also post Week 3 while I am at it! I only missed one photograph (day 16). This is usually around the time I start slacking off on a photo a day challenge, so missing just one isn’t so bad! I am still pushing myself to keep at it, and maybe that will lead into the next month! The whole point of launching my photo a day challenge is so that I can get back into taking photographs and giving thought to the little things in my life.

This is a good segue into the new year – do you have any New Year’s resolutions? I need to start thinking of them…

December photo challenge: Week 2

Photo a Day Challenge Week 2

While the second week of December has already passed and we are finishing up week 4 now…I’m still sharing my second week of my December photo challenge on the blog. In case you didn’t know, I am taking a photograph every day for the month of December.

While I started out taking photos with my film camera, and then supplementing them with photos on my phone, I took less photos on my camera than I had hoped. But still. I am keeping up as much as I can by posting my photo a day challenge on Instagram (@shrista) – so check me out there to find out what I will be up to the rest of December!

What are your favorite little moments in December so far?
